Supporting our partners to help regenerate the Port Hills
BPCT is proud to facilitate the Te Kākahu Kahukura (TKK) programme supporting a collaboration of 20+ organisations and landowners to realise a vison of replanting and regenerating indigenous podocarp forest on the southern Port Hills.
One of the Te Kākahu Kahukura’s strategies is the podocarp enrichment programme, which aims to plant 10,000 podocarps from Gebbies Pass to Godley Head. We hope to see these forest giants that once cloaked the Port Hills will once again thrive and provide habitat for our precious native fauna – as well as helping us to grow a climate resilient city. We’re almost halfway there with 4,165 podocarps planted across 17 sites to date and another 500 being planted this year.
Ultimately, the collective efforts of iwi, local agencies, community conservation groups, and private landowners will create a network of connected, native habitat corridors across the Peninsula, enabling indigenous biodiversity to thrive.
All of us can help make this happen – one plant at a time!
